Being a culmination of family and friends, The Dancing Goat Distillery truly was a lifetime in the making.  As a young boy growing up in the 1930’s, Duane Maas learned what hard work meant.  He spent his childhood working on the 675 acre family farm in Shawnawo WI.  Out of of his siblings he was the only one that had the opportunity to go to college and after just one year of school Duane had the calling to serve his country in the Korean war.  Once the war was over he returned to school and fell in love with the art of chemistry and  science of chemical engineering.

Fast forwarding 30 years Duane found himself as one of the preeminent distillers of the 20th century, having built distilleries in 8 different countries.  Known for his commitment to integrity in character, methodology, intention, and quality.  Although at rest, we are driven to continue Duane’s legacy.  His spirit and passion are in everything we do.  In fact, Duane has a memorial that sits out front of the Goat.  Many of us are known to sit and talk with him when we are in need of a fresh perspective, a moment silence or needing the answer to an industry specific question that we know he could answer.  He will always guide the Dancing Goat.

Tucked in the vineyards of the Cambridge Winery, just 15 minutes West of Madison in Cabmridge WI, the Dancing Goat opened their doors in the Fall of 2017 with their debut whisky, Limousin Rye.

Sitting just outside the tasting room is a 240 gallon pot still, build by Specific Mechanical.  The still has 3 interchangeable heads, one of which was designed by Duane’s Grandson which allows us to pull off at a higher proof.   A second still is coming January 2018 that has already named The Whiskey Rocket.  This beast has four 18 foot tall copper columns.  This rocket is a sight to be seen.
